First grade has been learning about Structures and Functions in NGSS- the ways in which animals adapt to the environment they live in. This week, they went on a field trip to the zoo. After going to the zoo, the students continued exploring these concepts in the form of a challenge. Posing the question "This summer you will develop animal feet in order to have a more fun summer vacation. What feet will you grow and why?" We read What if You Had Animal Feet? to build our schema. Then we #AppMashed with #Doodlebuddy and #Chatterpix! Kids took pics of their feet, drew the feet they wanted to grow, and recorded themselves explaining why they grew the feet they did. This was a fun extension activity that didn't require a whole lot of planning ahead of time. A win for everyone on a Friday morning!

Students participated in bookclubs in class. As a culminating activity, they were asked to "sell" their book using a persuasive digital booktalks. Students used a variety of methods to convey their enthusiasm about their book. After watching the movies, they got to select their next book club book based off the book talks! All School Read is a community based literacy event. With the partnership of Lyon and Pleasant Ridge faculties and over 800 students, our communities read the same book "Maybe Something Beautiful" at the same time, participating in common discussions, activities and reflections. This event encourages students to read in the upcoming summer months, promotes Random Act of Kindness week and RED day, supports students' end of the year transitions, and fosters relationships between our two schools. #communitybasedliteracyevent #AllSchoolRead #MaybeSomethingBeautiful MAKER MARCH was an in depth exploration of the tools and materials in our Design Lab. Classes became experts in one tool (Dash robots, Cubelets, or Construction materials) in our LRC through a series of three lessons. They went through the design thinking process, completing a challenge with their chosen tool. They learned to use materials responsibly, and focus on collaborating with others. #designthinking #makerspace #PBL
Second grade students extensively study fairy tales. As a culminating activity, students read multiple versions of a fairy tale. Then, by using textual evidence, the students planned, designed, and created houses! This activity emphasized comparison and contrasting multiple texts and was a collaborative effort, between the second grade team, instructional coach and the LRC.
Students have participated in the#globalcardboardchallenge during the past month. In order for students to participate, they must complete a planning sheet, and execute their plan with the materials available in the LRC. The Global Cardboard Challenge gives children an opportunity to collaborate, learn, and build the things they imagine through a simple process called Creative Play. The Challenge lets children explore their interests and passions; teaches critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance, teamwork and other 21st century skills! Kindergarten is moving into their units about Fall. To support their learning, we read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and students made designs with natural materials they collected on a recent walking field trip.
